Hummy Garden

Seated on my porch swing, sheltered from the drizzling rain, I began painting this scene of a little crystal hummingbird. I never tire of birds or flowers so this was a very enjoyable subject.

After finishing the sketch, the rain increased and I had to move indoors. I took a quick reference photo and then retreated. Once inside, I ditched the reference photo and just began to play and experiment. Mostly with shading, texture, and wet on wet color mixing. It was relaxing to ease in the subtle background which gave definition to the crystal bird. This one took on more of an illustrative look thanks to happy space hummingbirds create in my mind.
